Belmont Hills Explores the Traditions of India

Towards the end of October, Belmont Hills Elementary welcomed artist and educator Ramya Ramnarayan for a special assembly on the Traditions of India, presented in partnership with Young Audiences of New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania. The program coincided with Diwali, the “Festival of Lights” — a five-day holiday celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs around the world that symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

Originating in Hindu temples more than 2,000 years ago, traditional Indian dance combines fluid movement with intricate melodies and rhythmic patterns. Through Ramya Ramnarayan’s performance, students experienced the important role dance plays in the cultural and spiritual life of India. Adorned with colorful costumes, jewelry and makeup — and using ritual hand gestures called mudras — Ramnarayan and her dancers conveyed a shared language of expression that was both physical and poetic.

Throughout the program, Ramnarayan invited several groups of students to join her on stage to learn and demonstrate a variety of traditional Indian dances. Overall, the assembly was a joyful, hands-on experience that brought the beauty of India’s traditions to life.

Since its founding in 1973, Young Audiences has grown into the region’s largest arts education organization. Early work focused on introducing children to classical music, but today, YA is a valued school partner providing teaching artist–led programming across all art forms and numerous cultures.
