Ahead of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, students at Bala Cynwyd Middle School dedicated their half-day to supporting a local nonprofit with special ties to the Knights' community: Lucy Belle’s Rainbow.
The students collected art supplies and carefully assembled them into gift bags for children undergoing cancer treatment at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). These gifts—part of Lucy Belle’s Rainbow’s art therapy initiative—are designed to offer comfort and creative outlets to children receiving care. Alongside the supplies, students created a vibrant collection of rainbow-themed cards filled with uplifting messages to inspire hope and encouragement during difficult times.
This meaningful event was led by BCMS art teacher Beverly Rusoff, a co-founder of Lucy Belle’s Rainbow and one of Lucy’s former teachers. The organization was established in memory of Lucy Belle Perkins, a former BCMS student with a passion for art who tragically passed away at age 14 from a brain tumor. Lucy Belle’s Rainbow continues her legacy by providing art supplies and therapeutic support to children battling cancer at CHOP.
