At their recent spring concert, Bala Cynwyd Middle School’s choral program—under the direction of music teachers Anne Sterner-Porreca and Bob Elias—performed “You Will Be Found” from the popular musical Dear Evan Hansen. Inspired by the song’s heartening message, the Knights’ vocalists engaged in a meaningful multidisciplinary project combining art, music and community service.
While the talented 7th- and 8th-grade vocalists painted beautiful miniature canvases, 5th and 6th graders designed thoughtful journal covers—each decorated with messages and imagery conveying hope, connection and the reassurance that even in moments of loneliness and despair, someone cares and will reach out.
The BCMS Music Department donated these heartfelt creations to Laurel House, a local domestic violence treatment center in Montgomery County. The Mission of Laurel House is to:
- Advocate for and empower those impacted by domestic violence by providing crisis intervention, safe haven, supportive programs and resources.
- Advance social change through preventative education, community training and collaboration to foster a coordinated response to domestic abuse.
This project exemplifies the intersection of the arts and community service, demonstrating how music, art and creativity can uplift and support those facing life’s challenges!
