Students in 7B took part in a unique interdisciplinary humanities project called "Tiles and Tales," which combined lessons in art, social studies and writing.
They started by learning about the Lenni-Lenape people, the original stewards of the land where Black Rock Middle School is located. The school is named for the unique local rock formations, which the Lenni-Lenape used to create tools and other implements.
In English Language Arts, students examined the power of oral storytelling and read Lenape folktales like The Sacrifice of Rainbow Bird, uncovering themes of courage, friendship and cultural values.
Inspired by these stories, students collaborated in art classes to design and create colorful ceramic tiles featuring animals that held personal significance.
Returning to ELA, students wrote their own short stories inspired by their chosen animals and the folktales they studied. Students reviewed each other's art and stories to identify themes, such as use of color, unusual or surprise endings and connections to their studies of the Lenni-Lenape.
This project, a vision of Black Rock Art teacher Amanda Fazzini, emphasized creativity, cultural awareness and the connections among disciplines. To see photos of the creations, please click through the slide show below.
