Website
The Great Mail Race Web Resources This web page contains links to US state info, maps and games. It also contains resources that will help teachers or students track down addresses and email addresses of elementary throughout the United States.

This project integrates Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, and Technology. Students used the internet to identify elementary schools in each of the 50 states. Each student then selected a school and sent a survey with a cover letter explaining the project to the 2nd grade teachers at the school. Responses were tallied and recorded on a map of the US. Data received was entered in a database. Students used internet resources to contact a school to also gather the survey information via email.

This is the survey form mailed or emailed to schools. For those schools to which it was sent in email format, an RTF, text, AppleWorks, and Word version were attached so that it could be opened regardless of the receiving teacher's equipment, software, and expertise.

Students, with teacher guidance, used an AppleWorks 6 database to enter survey information gathered from those schools that responded. Returned survey data was entered into a database and discussed. These files show samples of completed entries.

MailExDBTempl.cws Students used a AppleWorks 6 database to enter survey information from those schools that responded.

Students graphed the data comparing the length of time taken and the number of responses received between mailed vs. emailed surveys. The data gathered and the advantages and disadvantages of each method of communication were discussed.
