Dinosaurs came in all different
sizes and shapes. Some were huge with long necks
and tails, some were fat with short legs, some were
small and very fast, some were tall and stood on
two legs.
The longest dinosaurs like
Seismosaurus
were nearly 150 feet long, and it weighed more than
7 fire engines. Argentinosaurus
was not as long but weighed up to 100 tons.
Tyrannosaurus
Rex, one of the largest
dinosaurs with sharp teeth and claws, was so big
that you could have climbed right into
its
mouth. The smallest
dinosaurs, Compsognathus,
were 70 cm. long (about the size of a chicken) and
would have fit in your bookbag. Most dinosaurs were
in-between.
Brachiosaurus
has been estimated to have weighed between 32 and
87 tons. To get an idea of how heavy that is, think
about how much an elephant weighs. Then think about
how much 20 elephants would weigh. That's how much
some of these dinosaurs that were nearly half as
long as a football field weighed!
The largest animals to have ever
lived were not dinosaurs. The blue
whale is the largest
animal. Some of these whales weigh about 200 tons.
So they are more than twice as heavy as the largest
dinosaurs.
Why
did they grow so big?
