What Makes For a Successful Online Experience?

Independence, of course, is a key element to successful online experiences.  But what does that mean?  Yes, the student who is organized and sits down to her homework every night is an independent minded student.  However, when we use the word, independence, here, we really mean a student who has the ability to be an independent learner.  This student has developed or has the ability to develop the tools and skills to manage a project.  How do you know that you have this skill or can develop this skill?  Simply ask yourself the question, Do I love to learn?  If the answer is “Yes,” then you are on the way.

Comfort with technology is important, but the VHS environment is so well organized, you do not need to be a techie to be successful in an online environment.

Many think that if a student is successful in a traditional class, then that student will be successful in an online class.  Many also think that a student who struggles in a traditional class will struggle in the online environment.  Studies show, however, that this is not necessarily true.  A student who has struggled in traditional classes should not shy away from an online experience.  Many students find the online environment far more comfortable than traditional environments, and many are far more successful in that online environment.

Harriton students may take any course through Virtual High School that is not offered in the regular Harriton curriculum.  Check the VHS catalogue for a full list of available courses.

If you think that you would like to take an online course, please feel free to contact Mr. Crooke and ask how to start the process of registering for an online course.
