Dear parent/guardian,
We are pleased to be able to offer the FluMist influenza vaccine again this year to students in our middle and high schools. The Montgomery County Department of Health and the Lower Merion School District support influenza immunization programs as they offer parents a convenient opportunity to immunize their children against a disease that can cause significant illness and complications. Immunization of school aged children is a significant factor in limiting influenza outbreaks in a community. This program will not replace routine vaccinations that your child may receive through his/her pediatrician however it is an added convenience for parents of healthy children who may not otherwise have their children immunized against influenza. Since FluMist is a live attenuated vaccine, it should not be given to children who have chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or weakened immune systems. Children with underlying chronic health conditions should receive inactivated vaccine in the form of an influenza injection through their care providers and should not receive FluMist. FluMist vaccine will be administered to students by nurses employed by Maxim Health Systems during the lunch periods on the scheduled day of administration.
If you would like your child to receive FluMist at school, please do the following:
- Read the information and consent forms carefully (available on the LMSD website and the websites of each secondary school and in the office of the school nurse). Discuss any concerns about immunization with your child's health care provider.
- Pre-register your child. Include your child's name, school and grade and email to FluMist@lmsd.org or you may call 610 645-1829 to pre-register. Please also note if your child is on the free/reduced lunch program so that you may receive information regarding financial assistance for eligible students. Pre-registration is necessary so that we may order the correct number of doses of vaccine and to facilitate efficient administration of vaccine. After you pre-register, you must also follow instructions in #3 and #4 listed below.
- Note the date of administration for your child’s school:
- November 14 - Harriton High School
- November 15 - Lower Merion High School
- November 16 - Lower Merion High School
- November 19 - Bala Cynwyd Middle School
- November 20 - Welsh Valley Middle School
- Complete the consent form (available on LMSD and school websites and in the office of the school nurse). On the day of administration, send the completed consent form and check payable to Maxim Health Systems in the amount of $35.00 with your child. The check and the consent form should be given directly to the Maxim Health System nurse at the time of vaccine administration. Do not send the check or the consent form prior to the date of administration.
