Christopher Campbell Soccer Clinic for boys and girls in grades 2-5 on Sunday, April 6, from 1:00 - 5:00pm, Friends Central School.
Blaise Kesler is a third grader at Penn Wynne. Blaise's cousin Christopher Campbell died this past summer of a heart condition at the age of 21. He loved children and soccer. He shares a lot of the same history as our children in that he was from Lower Merion and grew up playing soccer in our community. The soccer players at The Friends Central School will be honoring Christopher by running the Christopher Campbell Soccer Clinic for boys and girls in grades 2-5 on Sunday, April 6, from 1:00 - 5:00pm. The proceeds of the soccer clinic will benefit the Soccer Africa Project (see information below). The deadline to enroll is March 15th. Information and sign-up forms are posted on the www.CTCTEN.org website and on the www.lmsc.net website. Please call Patrice Kesler if you have any questions or need more information, 610 642-8993 or pkkesler@gmail.com.
What is the Soccer Africa Project?
Christopher and his Franklin & Marshall College soccer team were to go to South Africa next month to do HIV/AIDS education and play soccer with the kids in Khayelitsha. Located on the outskirts of capital city Cape Town, Khayelitisha is poverty stricken and troubled by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This trip was truly near and dear to his heart. Ever since my nephew Christopher died last summer, my sister and her family have undertaken a huge Soccer Africa project in his honor. The goal of the project is to build a soccer field and clubhouse in Khayelitsha, South Africa. They have selected a site for the field next to the Baphumelele orphanage. One of the volunteers at the orphanage started a soccer league for kids in the orphanages called the The Desiree Ellis Soccer League . Now, as a result of the Soccer Africa project, the kids at Baphumelele will have a real field to play on. The project also includes building a clubhouse which will be used in conjunction with Grassrootsoccer to provide soccer-themed HIV/AIDS education. You can read more about all of this at the website for Christopher's foundation, www.ctcten.org.
With the 2010 World Cup being played in Africa and a lot of our children at Penn Wynne playing soccer, the Soccer Africa project is a way to raise awareness of the issues that face the children on this continent. I know that for Blaise, the images of African children his own age playing soccer has helped him connect with the issues that face South Africa.
Hope to see you at the Christopher Cambell Soccer Clinic!
