Cynwyd’s Book Club
Parents and their fourth and fifth grade children have been reading together as they join in the activities of the Cynwyd Book Club. They meet in the evening, once a month, in the library. Participants are asked to read a book club selection prior to the meeting and be prepared for lively discussion of the story. Parents and children have the opportunity to share their opinions and insights into literature within a casual yet structured format. Refreshments are served after the meetings, sponsored by parents Irene Marks and Jude Lang. The May selection is Popy by Avi, a Newbery Honor author.
What’s New in Cynwyd’s Art World?
Cynwyd students will be learning about art created in North, Central, and South America this year. They will learn about the native peoples who produced this work and have begun to create projects inspired by the works. This theme is an interdisciplinary approach, as the students are also introduced to Native American culture in their classrooms. The children will be exposed to a wide range of various art media that include clay, printmaking, papier-mache, and weaving.
Fifth grade students are currently learning about Maria Martinez and her son Popovi Da. They are potters from San Ildefonso, New Mexico. The artists are famous for their black on black pottery. The students will be creating clay vessels using slab and coil techniques.
Fourth grade students have made a Museo that can be used to earn art extra credit. They may visit a museum or find art in an unusual space and share what they learned with their classmates.
First grade students are focusing on patterns as they begin their Guatemalan Huipils. They are using recycled objects to create object prints. Second grade students are also learning about patterns as they begin their Colombian printmaking project, inspired by the gold medallions found in the Museo del Oro, the Gold Museum. The students are creating stylized animals using line drawings.
