Harriton, LM students travel to Japan

Fourteen students from Harriton and Lower Merion high schools recently traveled to Japan for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to experience Japanese culture first-hand while having the opportunity to put their foreign language skills to the test. The first stop for students and chaperones Nakamura Sensei and Ms. Castagnet was Tokyo, where the group explored the dynamics of one of the busiest cities in the world and enjoyed delicious Japanese cuisine.

The LMSD contingent then flew to the Kagoshima prefecture in southern Japan where they were hosted by the Kagoshima Joho High School. Students attended regular academic classes and also had the opportunity to take special courses like cooking, taiko drumming, calligraphy and kimono dressing. Each student stayed with a host family for a week and embraced the similarities and differences between Japanese and American cultures. The last leg of the trip took the group to Kyoto where the students and teachers visited the spiritual Shinto shrines and temples.
