We realize that students may have medical
conditions, which require the use of medication. In most situations,
doses of the prescribed medication can be given at home. There are
specific conditions and circumstances when a physician prescribed
medication may be administered by school personnel during the school
day. The District Medication Policy states that medication prescribed
to treat an injury, disease or disorder will be administered when
(1) failure to take such medication would jeopardize the health of
the pupil, or (2) the pupil would not be able to attend school if
the medication was not made available during regular school hours.
The following procedures are necessary to comply with the Pennsylvania
State laws including those of the State Board of Nurse Examiners.
Please consult the nurse in your child's school if you have any
questions.
Before the administration of any medication including over the
counter medication, the following requirements must be met:
- Complete Form (obtain form school nurse)
- Written permission and signature of the parent/guardian
- Written order of the attending physician and signature. The order
must include the name of the medication, the dosage, the route of
administration, the time at which, or the special circumstances
under which the medication shall be administered, the length of
the period for which medication is prescribed and the possible side
effects of the medication.
- A list of other current medications taken at school or at home.
- The medication in its original labeled container shall be delivered
by the parent/guardian to the Principal or School Nurse.
- Complete the Authorization form for School Medication Administration,
which requires both parent and physician signatures.
- The parent/guardian or adult designee must hand deliver the
medication to the Principal or Nurse's office in the labeled prescription
container or original over the counter container. Upon request,
most pharmacists will provide two label containers for a prescription
so that one can be brought to school. Label the original over-the
counter container with the child's name, purpose of the medication,
dosage and time to be given.
- Changes in dosage require a physician's note as well as parent's
direction.
- Medication will be kept in a secure locked place in the Nurse's
office.
- Medication will be administered by the School Nurse or the persons
designated by the Principal in the Nurse's absence.
- The parent/guardian or adult designees will pick up medication at
the end of the school year. The School Nurse will destroy any unclaimed
medication.
