| Effective January 1999, The Pennsylvania State Board
of Education adopted Chapter 4 regulations for academic standards
and assessments. The new regulations apply to schools, intermediate
units and charter schools.
Students will be required to achieve established academic standards
in specific academic areas during their education. The actual standards
for reading, listening, speaking and writing, and mathematics have
been established; standards for other areas are being developed.
The state assessments, called the PSSA, are administered to students
in grades 5, 8, and 11. Parents and community members can connect
