GUIDE FOR WRITING LETTERS TO LEGISLATORS

  1. On the envelope use "The Honorable" and in the body of the letter use "Dear Senator " or "Dear Representative."
  2. Identify yourself as a registered voter in his or her district.
  3. If possible, identify the bill in which you are interested by number and printer's number, giving a brief description of its provisions.
  4. Give the reasons for the position you are taking. Be specific and let the legislator know how the measure will affect his or her own district.
  5. One typewritten page is usually sufficient.
  6. Limit your letter to one subject.
  7. Send your letter when the bill is being considered in committee or on the floor.
  8. Ask specifically for your legislatior's support or opposition to the bill or issue you are concerned about
