Penn Valley's "Pennies for Puerto Rico" raises nearly $3K for relief efforts

Penn Valley Elementary School recently organized a "Pennies for Puerto Rico" fundraiser as students and staff collected money in an effort to help in the hurricane-ravaged island's relief efforts. Ultimately, the initiative raised a total of $2,741.26, which will be donated to Habitat for Humanity in Puerto Rico to help families affected by the recent hurricane rebuild their homes.

In September, Hurricane Maria, a powerful Category 4 storm slammed into several islands in the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico. Hurricane Maria was the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico in 85 years, sustaining winds of approximately 155 m.p.h. and leaving the island with no electricity, widespread flooding, and houses that were destroyed.

Each day during the fundraising campaign, six buckets were placed in the lobby with each grade level having their own designated bucket and students could place any coins or dollars they collected into the different buckets. Every penny that is placed in a bucket adds a point to that grade level's score, while any other type of coin or bill subtracts points from that score. Hence, in a competition between Group A and Group B, a contributor who wants Group A to win will place pennies into Group A's bucket and nickels, dimes, quarters, or dollar bills into Group B's bucket.

At the end of the competition, Penn Valley's fifth grade class had accumulated the most points. For their efforts, the fifth grade students have earned the opportunity to do the morning announcements with Señora Claussen, and each class will be receiving a certificate to hang in their classrooms for their participation in the campaign.

The students and staff at Penn Valley would like to thank Home Depot in Glen Mills for donating the buckets for the Penny Competition, and the Republic Bank in Wynnewood for their help in calculating the money each day. Señora Claussen and Mr. Mudd would also like to thank all of the Penn Valley students, staff, and families that donated money to this worthy cause!
