Middle School Schedule Alignment

Dear Bala Cynwyd and Welsh Valley Parent(s)/Guardian(s):

As we shared with you earlier this school year, we have been engaged in aligning our middle school schedules for the 2017-18 school year. The goal is to ensure equity in programs and offerings for students at both middle schools and to better align the schedule with our strategic plan. Thanks to all who participated in our survey on this topic and shared valuable feedback in guiding our planning process. Among the key values/priorities that emerged from students, staff, and parents were:

· Maintaining teaming structure

· Including daily intervention and enrichment time

· Ensuring that core classes meet daily

· Keeping class length between 40 and 50 minutes

· Increasing student choice in scheduling

· Ensuring teacher collaboration time

· Maintaining the time devoted daily to personal development courses or “specials”

With these priorities in mind, we presented a formal recommendation to the Curriculum Committee of the Board of School Directors in a public meeting on Wednesday 3/8/17. Our recommended schedule option is a 4-day cycle. Its benefits include:

· Greater scheduling flexibility for student supports and enrichment

· Increased student choice in courses of interest

· Closer alignment with our Strategic Plan

On Monday 3/13/17, we will present this recommendation with the full Board of School Directors for formal review at the Board’s Education Committee Meeting, scheduled for 8 PM in the Board Room of the LMSD Administration Building. You are welcome to attend to watch the presentation, learn more about the schedule, and hear how we plan to implement it next school year. There will also be an opportunity for public feedback. We will share the presentation on our website following the meeting.

We believe the proposed 4-day cycle will ensure a more effective, equitable, efficient, and student-friendly schedule, while supporting the integrity of our programs and student experience. Thanks again to all who contributed to the District’s work on this important topic.

Sincerely,

Dr. Scott Eveslage
